Frequently Asked Questions
How do I grant folder permissions?
When you first open CleanMyMacOS, the onboarding flow guides you through granting folder access. You can also go to the Permissions section in the sidebar at any time. Click "Grant Access" and select the folder in the standard macOS file picker. The app stores secure bookmarks so you only need to do this once per folder.
Is it safe to delete the files CleanMyMacOS finds?
Yes, with caveats. Every file is assigned a risk level: Safe (caches, logs), Review Recommended (downloads, app leftovers), or Advanced (system-related). The app's SafetyPolicyEngine permanently blocks critical files like Keychains, Mail, Photos, and SSH keys. Files are moved to Trash by default — you can always recover them. We recommend reviewing items marked "Review" before confirming deletion.
Can I undo a cleanup?
Yes. By default, all files are moved to the macOS Trash, not permanently deleted. Open the Trash in Finder to recover any files. Permanent deletion only happens if you manually empty the Trash. The app also keeps an audit log of every cleanup session in the History section.
Why does the app ask for folder access?
CleanMyMacOS is sandboxed (App Store requirement). Sandboxed apps can only access folders you explicitly grant permission to via the macOS file picker. This is a security feature — the app cannot silently scan your entire drive. You choose what it can see.
What's the difference between Free and Pro?
The Free tier includes Dashboard, Smart Scan, and cleanup up to 500 MB per month with basic tweaks. Pro unlocks unlimited cleanup, the App Uninstaller, Large File Scanner, Duplicate Finder, Developer Tools, Storage Map, Maintenance Tasks, all macOS Tweaks, Privacy Tools, Startup Items, and scheduled reminders.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Go to System Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions on your Mac. Find CleanMyMacOS and click "Cancel Subscription." Your Pro features remain active until the end of the current billing period.
How do I request a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the CleanMyMacOS purchase, and submit a refund request.
Why can't the app run maintenance tasks directly?
Because the app is sandboxed, it cannot execute Terminal commands or use sudo. Instead, it shows you the exact command to copy and paste into Terminal yourself. This way you see exactly what will run, you authenticate directly with macOS, and the app never has your admin password.
Does CleanMyMacOS work on Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4)?
Yes. CleanMyMacOS is a universal binary that runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.
Does the app collect any data or analytics?
No. CleanMyMacOS has zero telemetry. No analytics, no crash reporting, no usage tracking. Nothing leaves your Mac. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How do I restore macOS tweaks to their defaults?
Each tweak in the macOS Tweaks section has a revert button. Click it to restore the macOS default value. Some tweaks require restarting Finder or the Dock, which the app handles automatically or guides you through.
The app shows 'Full Disk Access Required'. What should I do?
For the most complete scan, CleanMyMacOS benefits from Full Disk Access. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and add CleanMyMacOS. This allows the app to scan protected locations like the Trash and certain Library folders.
